An Introduction To Jet Lag
Going to bed at nightfall and getting up again at dawn is perhaps one of the most natural and instinctive cycles that your body follows. But, as the ease and speed of global travel increases and the world gets figuratively smaller, adhering to that cycle becomes increasingly difficult.
Going to bed at nightfall and getting up again at dawn is perhaps one of the most natural and instinctive cycles that your body follows. But, as the ease and speed of global travel increases and the world gets figuratively smaller, adhering to that cycle becomes increasingly difficult.
If you are a long-haul traveler, either traveling for pleasure or on business, then you will already understand the problem.
You arrive at your destination excited at the prospect of sightseeing and touring, or perhaps at the possibility of a new business venture, and, with a limited amount of time, you want to make the most of every moment.
But, despite your excitement and mental energy, your body screams for sleep, regardless of the fact that it may be early morning or mid-afternoon at your destination.
Unfortunately, taking a nap doesn't provide the answer – in fact, it might just make adjusting to the new time zone even more difficult.
Consider the following scenario:
A business traveler flies half-way around the world for a series of important meetings with some new clients. Because of the time change, he arrives at midday – although the clock back at home reads midnight.
Thrilled at being in a new place, and mentally energized at the prospect of the upcoming meetings, he finds himself ready to fit in some quick sightseeing before getting down to business.
There's just one problem - his body can't seem to keep up.
Frustrated, and physically tired, the traveler opts for a few hours sleep before heading out for dinner and an early night. Unfortunately, when he returns from dinner and heads for bed he finds himself unable to get to sleep.
After lying wide awake for several hours, he ultimately gets up and starts work – after all, the clock back at home now reads midday.
This situation may seem all too familiar. You may have made similar efforts to stave off jet lag or to speed up your adjustment to a new time zone by indulging your body's desire for sleep – after all, it's a natural thing to want to do.
This particular trap however catches both business and pleasure travelers alike.
While withstanding the physical desire to sleep may appear to go against your natural instincts, not taking the appropriate preventative or proactive measures to properly manage jet lag can prove far worse – and could ultimately lead to serious, or more persistent, sleep disorders

Customer Review: Excellent book for overcoming jet lag. I used it on a 7 day work trip to Malaysia, which is 13 hours time difference from home.
