Object Meditation

Remember that when selecting your object, it needs to be something that has a positive association for you. It can be an object that you possess now, something you used to own, or an object that you create in your imagination.

The Art of Meditation

It doesn't matter whether the object is real or imaginary, it is important, however, that it gives you the relaxing sensation that you are looking for.

  • Choose a comfortable pose and begin with a series of deep, relaxing breaths.

  • If the object is in your line of sight, you can keep your eyes open. If the object is being visualized, close your eyes and bring it into your mind's eye.

  • Observe your emotional reaction to the object, if any. If thoughts or associations come, acknowledge them and then brush them aside. Continue to return your concentration to the object itself.

  • Observe the image, noticing any changes in the object. Does it change size? Orientation? Color?

  • Notice how these changes make you feel.

  • End your meditation by dismissing the object and concentrating on your breathing as you bring your awareness back to your present state.

  • Gently stretch before getting up.
